Andrew slipped out of the Leader's office quietly. His booming voice scared him and made him shiver. But he was his guard and did everything he said, his father would have wanted him too. After a freak accident, god knows what happened, his father died and his mother abandoned him. The closest person he had to family was the Leader. His name would never be exposed because he said it was dangerous. Even the guard would never know his name. He hadn't completely trusted him yet. Andrew wondered why though, why hadn't the Leader told him how his father died or why didn't he trust him to tell him his name? Andrew pondered this for a while, then realized the people in the cafeteria still wanted an answer for the lack of food.

He ran to the cafeteria and tapped the microphone. Heads began to turn his way.  "Ladies and gentleman I would like to announce that the reason there isn't as much food on your plate is because we are saving it so we have more in the future. That is all." He stepped away form the microphone as people started clamoring about the announcement. Many voices merged together as he walked away from the scene. The Leader's door opened and he stood at the balcony. He found Andrew's eyes and stared at him in disbelief and disappointment. Andrew had tried his best and had failed. The look on the Leader's face said that Andrew hadn't tried hard enough. He hung his head and walked up toward the Leader. "I'm sorry I said we were trying to-" The Leader grabbed his neck and pushed his up against the wall. "For an old man I can still do this." The Leader smirked. "Whatever you told them wasn't good enough and I hope your happy that you caused exactly what I didn't want you too." Andrew gasped for air, his eyesight slightly darkening.

I took Angel's hand and pushed through the condensing crowd. Once we were out, I saw the guard against the wall and the Leader choking him. I let go of Angel's hand and ran up the stairs. I could see the guards eyes slowly closing. I pushed the Leader out of the way and the guard hit the floor, passed out. The Leader fell to the floor as well and he looked at me with his mean eyes. The ones he had the day he met us. "What the hell is wrong with you boy!?" He screamed and ran at me with impressive speed, knocking me down. With his knees on either side of my body he pressed his thumbs into my neck. "The good thing is I can take care of you up here while they are down there." He laughed evilly and I struggled to get him off of me. "Angel..." I gasped and the Leaders face started to blur. "Your girlfriend isn't coming for you." He smiled and pressed harder. I gasped for air faster and whatever the Leader was saying I couldn't understand it. My thought fuzzed as well. I thought I saw Angel coming up behind him but I also saw my parents. I closed my eyes and sank into the silent abyss.

I felt relief, like there was no weight on my shoulders. I felt as if I was a feather drifting softly into the breeze. 'I'm dead' I thought at last. I wouldn't feel like this if I was still living in that underground city. My heart beat wouldn't be so calm if I was near Angel. my love, she was gone, forever. Until she died as well and maybe, possibly, we would meet again. Isn't that what should happened. You meet with your loved one when you die, family, friends, loves. As I drifted farther and farther down I realized Angel was too strong to die now. She was brave and strong and beautiful and had the will strong than anyone's. But so did I, so why did I have to die? Why did I have to sink farther down even though I had the same will? I wanted to live, to go back and be with my Angel.

I began to swim up, faster and faster. The surface looked miles away but I knew I could do it. No one was going to keep me away from my Angel, my love. I crashed into the surface and gasped for air. I couldn't see anything but I could feel a familiar touch, it was the blankets that were in my room in the city. I tugged at the thing in front of my eyes, it was a warm washcloth. I looked around and stood up too quickly, which ended in falling back onto the bed. I sat at the edge and took a breath. Everything was blurry for a moment, but soon I could tell it was Angel's and my room. I looked at the pot and it hit the floor. I jumped and called for Angel. "Angel?" I asked. "Angel?!" I yelled louder. I got up, testing my balance, then went out the door looking for her. "Angel? Where are you?" I yelled and ran, checking every room. I heard footsteps and spun around. Someone crashed into me and squeezed me tightly. Angel. I hugged her tightly back. Tears ran down my face like tiny waterfalls. I remembered the feeling, the emptiness I felt without her. I looked down the hallway for anyone that was coming and the light fixture broke. Angel didn't pay any mind. I ignored the weird events that had happened and cherished the time that was now. I felt my shirt wet and knew she was crying as well. I rubbed her back and felt bumps between her shoulder blades. My face twisted in confused. She let go and looked up at me. "What's wrong." She reached her back and found the bumps. "What the.." she started and then she jumped. The bumps had grown in 2 seconds. "What's going on?" I asked. "I don't know." She replied. She grabbed my hand and pulled me down the hallway toward the cafeteria. "Duck down." she said and we did. Between the banisters you could see people still fighting, some surrounded by crimson liquid on the floor, not moving. "Where's the Leader?" I whispered. "His office." she replied, equally quietly. We crawled on our hands and knees, closer to where the guard was beginning to wake and where I had died.

He clasped his hands as he sat at the dusty desk. "The more people I find, the less food we have." he muttered to himself. He had checked the food supplies and found it was very low. There wasn't another way to get more food unless he went out into the toxic air. He was worried about the new comers and many of the others. Could the toxic air have had an effect on them and he didn't know it? Or maybe it hasn't taken effect yet, or at all? There were so many questions rattling in his mind. It seemed as if they would never be answered. The door opened and he sat up quickly. "Sir," the guard said. "I have checked the food and it's very low. The survivors are starting to worry that is why their portions are smaller. What should I say sir?"  He thought about the fate of telling them. Wouldn't it cause a killing raid? The guard stood quiet as a mouse as the man sat thinking. "Make up a good lie." he said finally and sighed. The guard stood with his mouth a gape. "Why Sir? Can't we just-" "No! It will cause a frenzy. Remember your place Andrew!" The man interrupted with fury. Andrew cringed and slowly walked out with a quiet "yes sir".

"Seth wake up." I threw his clothes at him. He pushed them off and looked around for the thrower. I was putting on my shirt when he finally got the clothes off him. "Get up and put those on. Breakfast is waiting." He yawned and kicked off the covers. I sat at the edge of the bed and put on my soot-covered converse. "What time is it?" he asked sleepy as he pulled on his jeans. "Nine o'clock. I said as I tied my last shoe. I got up and put my hair in a ponytail. "Let's eat.

When we got into the dining room, it looked like the mall population. There were many long tables filled with people. Some round tables in the front were empty so we got in line and sat at them. We were having waffles with scrambled eggs. This is it? I thought. "I guess they want to save the food." Seth whispered quietly. I smiled. He had read my mind.

I opened the door to the surface. It was still drizzling ash but I could see through the smoke a figure. "Hey!" I yelled and ran toward the figure. It turned toward me and started waling. "Over here!" I called. As the figure came closer, details emerged from the smoke. It was a man in a simple what used to be white, T-shirt. It was now smoldered with soot. His face held years of wisdom and his hair was thin. "Another survivor!" His wrinkled face lit up with joy. He put his arm around my neck and began to walk. I stopped, which resulted in his arm falling off my shoulders. "What is it young lady?" he asked, confused. "My friend is waiting in my sanctuary, I must get him first." I said and began walking the opposite direction of the old man. "I'll come along so I can guild you both to the city." he said and matched my fast pace. "City?" I asked, dumbfounded."Oh yes, our underground city that has been working for years. We have food, water, oil, everything we would need for this disaster." He explained. "We knew this disaster would happened, so we prepared." he finished. "How did you know?" I asked. "The Mayans." he answered.

Finally we got to the sanctuary where Seth was waiting outside. He looked up at me, his eyes filled with worry and he ran and hugged me tightly. "I thought you left me." his voice wavered. He stepped back and dropped his hands to his side. Finally he saw the old man. "Who are you?" his voice stern. "The one who will lead you to safety." he said, his voice deepening. They glared at each other for a couple seconds, then the old man began walking. Seth took my arm and walked with me.

We stopped at an burned oak tree, the old man stomped the ground around him and we heard metal. He opened up a heavy door and we slipped inside. The way was lit by torches and there was a turn at the end of the hall. We turned the corner and a wooden door appeared at the end of the corridor. he opened it and a dining room was set out before us. It was not lined with desserts or turkey or vegetables. It was empty. "Looks like we missed lunchtime" I thought. He sat us down at the empty dinner table and sighed. "So if you are going to be living here. There are some rules. There pretty basic rules, not very complex. 1. No fighting, 2. No stealing, 3. No sex, 4-" Seth interrupted him. "No sex? You'd think that people down here or even us would have sex?" he asked. "We've had some incidents so yes, it is now a rule." he stated and cleared his throat. "4. No loud noises and lastly, 5. No trespassing" he sighed loudly and stood up. Now you two can be on your merry way. Enjoy your stay my friends." he smiled and went through a door that said "Do Not Enter".

We went through the main door and saw people bustling about, smiling, talking, laughing, it was like we were on the surface again. There were many kinds of people, unlike most of movies I had watched that had every one was the same, acted the same way, ate the same way, and so on.

We went to the apartments and found a room with two beds. It went dark inside the city but our room was light by candles we had found. I couldn't sleep though, everything was just rushing into my head so fast I think I could scream. I sat up and rubbed my forehead. I heard the rustling of sheets and a few floor boards creak. I looked up to find Seth standing in front of me. "You okay?" he asked, the flame dancing in his eyes. "Yeah I just can't sleep." I said and closed my eyes. "just a headache is all."

"Are you cold?" he asked. "Yeah a little why?" I asked, even though I knew what he was going to do. "I was just asking." he said quietly and turned to walk away but I grabbed his arm and pulled him toward me. "Sleep with me tonight then." I said. He climbed into the bed and wrapped his arms around me, his chin on my head. I felt the warmth of his body flow to me and I snuggled up to him. I could feel his heart beat a little faster. I opened my eyes and looked into the shadows of the lonely bed that wouldn't be slept in tonight.
